Position: Founder of New Horizon for Woman

Ms. Naba Saleem Hamid is an Iraqi scientist, educator, speaker, and women’s rights and peace activist at a time when tumultuous political, social and personal upheaval is a daily reality within her country.

She is a Professor of Parasitology in the College of Education at the University of Baghdad.
Other accomplishments include: published research and texts, teaching in the College of Medicine, Medical Research Center at the University of Baghdad; W.H.O. fellowship in bilharziasis at London University.

In 1982, Hamid’s Ph.D. thesis at London University was suspended due to the Ba’ath regime’s resolution prohibiting Iraqi women from applying for independent travel, and government funds for academic study abroad.

In September 2003, Hamid founded New Horizon For Woman and in May 2004 registered the NGO with the Iraqi Ministry of Planning and Development Co-Operation.
This organization represents her longstanding dedication to the education of and support for the women and youth of Iraq, and her commitment to help them contribute to the civil society of Iraq.

About New Horizons for Woman
New Horizon for Woman is an Iraqi-based, nonprofit organization dedicated to building capacities to achieve three key ends: Restore the Iraqi character and culture lost during years of war, sanctions, devastation, division, isolation, and fear. Help rebuild an inclusive Iraqi society and future that benefits all Iraqi people. The Iraqi character and culture we seek to restore are based on the following core values: integrity, generosity, friendship, caring for relatives and neighbors, and gratitude. The new values we seek to develop to build an Iraqi society and future that benefits all Iraqi people are: civility, respect for differences, responsibility, leadership, and care of the body, mind, emotions, spirit, and environment.
In addition, NHFW supports Iraqi people in contributing to the world.

Our vision is to empower women, youth, and communities to play a leadership role in restoring and rebuilding themselves, each other, and a democratic and economically sustainable Iraq. Through education NHFW focuses on all aspects of progress for guiding Iraqi girls and women to become active members of society; to communicate and respect individuals of regardless of their ideologies, gender, race, religion or political affiliation or any kind of discrimination; and to interact with like-minded women via the Internet as part of a global effort by women to create sustainable peace.

Our vision also includes building bridges to overcome walls of ignorance between the people of Iraq and people of the world. These bridges will be built in part through a global citizen’s campaign in the US and around the world to create awareness and action to support the future of Iraq and the shared future of all citizens’ of the world.

New Horizons for Women is a member of the Iraqi Women’s Network, an umbrella organization
for some 80 nongovernmental organizations that assist women.
